From Lamello to dowel and on to Domino
When you are making furniture, frames or other wooden components, one question is always central: what is the best way to join wood? There are countless methods, but three truly stand out: Lamello, dowel and Domino. Which method is the best match for your project?
Lamello joint
The Lamello joint began as a simple wooden plate connector, but today it is available in many shapes, sizes and materials. It is ideal for joining panel materials and furniture components.
There are dedicated Lamello machines and milling tools available, including variants for CNC applications.
Lamello’s P-System is especially popular with interior builders: fast to assemble, even on-site.
Comparable machines are available from Lamello, Makita and DeWalt.
Dowel joint
The classic dowel joint is the oldest method. Holes are drilled in both pieces of wood, into which a cylindrical wooden pin — the dowel — is glued.
Simple, strong and timeless.
Although this technique is used less frequently nowadays, it remains a reliable choice. Machine-assisted dowelling is possible with tools such as the Mafell DDF 40 dowel machine.
Domino joint
The Domino joint is a modern variation on the dowel, developed by Festool.
The oval shape ensures an extremely stable joint that resists shifting — ideal for hardwoods such as oak or beech.
Festool offers two main models:
- DF 500 – for light work such as panel materials and smaller furniture
- DF 700 – for heavy-duty applications such as frames, tables, chairs and beams
For the DF 700, longer Domino tenons are available, which you can cut to size yourself. This allows you to work professionally without the need for large stationary machines.
Which should you choose?
The best choice depends on your material, project and personal preference:
- Lamello – extremely fast and ideal for panel materials, especially interior work
- Dowel – classic, strong and budget-friendly
- Domino – fast, precise and extremely strong; suitable for furniture and structural applications
Whatever your preference: at Toolnation you will find all machines, accessories and joining systems to work professionally with Lamello, dowel or Domino.
