Scarifiers
How to use a Scarifier for your lawn
Now that you know what a scarifier is, here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your new gardening machine. Remove all debris from the lawn and apply an anti-Moss product, removing the dead moss before scarifying. A few weeks before you plan to use a scarifier, check your lawn for living moss or debris. You need to remove this before you do anything else. Spread this over your lawn with a good moss control agent according to the instructions. This is a very important step, because you don't want to spread the traces of living moss all over the garden with your detaching machine, causing a kind of moss epidemic!
Mow the lawn at a low setting
Once you are sure that the moss has died (it should look black or brown and dry), mow your lawn on a dry day with the mower on a low setting. If you do this before using the scarifier, you can collect the cut grass at the end of your work before it has time to do damage.
Scarify the lawn at a high setting
Start with the machine on a high setting and go over the surface a few times. Then repeat the process at an angle, but reduce the height of the settings with each pass.
When to use a scarifier
The ideal time to scarify your lawn can vary depending on where you live and the weather, but as a guideline, the best time is when grass growth is in full swing again. This growth season is normally in autumn or late spring. In terms of frequency, once a year is usually sufficient, or more often if your lawn is in poor condition with a lot of moss.
