Mowing the lawn: 5 tips

With the high temperatures in March and April, you most likely have had to mow the grass at some point. From March to October, it is important to mow the grass regularly. This way you get a beautiful and healthy lawn. Mowing the grass encourages the growth of fine grass and prevents weeds and moss in your lawn. In this blog article, we will give you a few tips on mowing the lawn and choosing a the best lawnmower.

Tip 1: mow regularly

The frequency of mowing your lawn depends on the time of year and how much rain it gets. In any case, don't let the grass grow too long as it will be more difficult to mow. In addition, less light will reach the soil, which means that the lawn will become thinner and may color may fade. During the months of March and April, mowing once every 2 weeks is sufficient. From May onwards, you will need to mow the grass every 5 days, depending on the growth of the grass.

Tip 2: mow when it's dry

We recommend you to only do it when the grass is dry. If you cut grass when it's wet then the grass will stick together, this can clog your lawnmower. In addition, dry grass stands up better so it can be cut more evenly.

Tip 3: catch the long blades of grass

If you mow the grass often, it is not necessary to catch it. Small blades of grass are not a problem for your lawn and even provide fertilization for the lawn. Long blades of grass, however, need to be caught. They cause suffocation and fungal growth, especially when the grass is a little damp. You can use a grass catcher to catch them. If you have a large lawn you can choose to mulch it. A mulching mower shreds the cut grass into fine particles.

Tip 4: don't cut the grass too short

Excessive short grass dries out quickly and can lead to bald spots and moss growth. The ideal cutting height is 2 - 3 cm. Especially if you have just fertilized the lawn, you should not cut it too short. Start with a high cutting height and then gradually reduce it.

Tip 5: choose the right lawnmower

The right lawnmower for your lawn depends mainly on the size of your lawn. For a small area of grass, a lawnmower that you move by hand is suitable. For larger lawns, battery or fuel powered lawnmowers are more suitable. You have the choice of a lawnmower with rotating blades (cylinder mower) or with a circular blade that cuts horizontally. For really large lawns, a riding mower is perfectly suitable. At Toolnation you will also find a robotic mower in our Bosch range, for the ultimate in convenience. View all our lawnmowers.
