Torque Wrenches

The torque wrench is a popular piece of hand tool when tightening car wheel nuts, working on engines and installations, and is also often used within bicycle assembly. With this special wrench, every bolt or nut can be tightened equally, no matter how much tension is applied to it. How does the Torque Wrench work?

Torque wrenches work on the principle of the familiar ratchet wrench or socket wrench. In doing so, force is transferred via a lever to bolts or nuts to be assembled. Their difference is that they do this until a specific force (or tension) is reached. The wrench then gives a warning signal via a spring and ball in the head; the 'click'. That is the moment to stop tightening. This prevents damage to bolts or nuts.

Setting

The required tension or force is expressed in Newtons, abbreviated Nm. What exactly the number of Newtons should be, for example for tightening the car's hubcaps, is usually provided by the manufacturer or dealer. You set the value of this 'torque' or 'tightening torque' on the key and lock it. Now the wrench is ready for use and will give a stop signal at the right moment.

Almost all torque wrenches in our range offer a certain tension range and are adjustable via steps, for example from 60 to 300 Nm or 5 to 25 Nm. The smallest wrenches have a higher accuracy in this respect than the larger sizes, which mainly offer more tension force.

Note: When buying this type of wrench, first check how many Newtons you need. Most types you set by hand to the correct value. With the latest generation of keys, this can often also be done digitally.

Tip for after use

Torque wrenches are calibrated in order to guarantee the correct tension. Due to frequent use, this calibration may show deviations after some time, as a result of which the wrench has to be adjusted again. In order to keep the wrench at the correct tension for as long as possible, it is important to put the wrench away in its relaxed position after use. So unlock it, unscrew it and set it to 0.
