What is a Voltage Detector?
A voltage detector is also called a voltage tester. The device has a black and red cable with measuring pins attached to it. You connect the measuring pins to the component whose voltage you want to measure. The black pin is always placed in the COM or minus pole of the device. The red cable is placed in the socket of the quantity to be measured. Nowadays, most voltage testers are equipped with a digital screen, for a quick and accurate reading.
What do you measure with a Voltage Detector?
A voltage detector can detect direct/inverse voltage in four ways. The meters are classified by category. The category rating is based on the maximum voltage level the device can measure. Most devices are made for a voltage in category 3 and 4. With a category 4 detector, you can measure devices in category 1, but not vice versa. So it is useful to think about what you want to check for voltage before you buy. The categories:
- CAT I: This is where you measure low voltage devices such as a mobile phone or torch batteries.
- CAT II: This is where you measure 230V plug connections of the low voltage network. These are often measurements for appliances in the home, such as your coffee machine.
- CAT III: These are measurements of 400V electrical installations, such as switches or a socket.
- CAT IV: These are measurements of low-voltage installations or main connections, such as your meter box.
How do you use a Voltage Tester?
A voltage tester is used by applying the meter in parallel to the object to be measured. The object to be measured is therefore between the measuring pins. You attach the black cable to the minus pole and the red cable to the plus pole. Because the internal resistance of the meter is infinitely high, it will not influence the voltage of the device to be measured. As a result, the meter does not draw any voltage, and you get an accurate measurement.
Go for a Voltage Detector
Go for a safe and accurate measurement with a voltage detector from Toolnation. Then you will always know the voltage of all your devices and sockets.
