How does a Thicknesser work?

A thicknesser is a woodworking machine that accurately planes wood to thickness and width. At the top of the machine is the chisel shaft, which consists of two or four chisels attached to a spiral shaft. In some thicknessers, the chisels are replaceable. The chisel shaft is set in motion by an electric motor. This motor also drives the feed and discharge rollers. Thus, the wood that enters a thicknesser is supplied by the supply roller, then the wood is planed in the machine. A planer is often used first, which planes the wood straight and flat on one side and one side only. This way, a flattening machine will first process one width side and one thickness side. A thicknesser then ensures that the wood on the other side is also planed parallel and that the wood gets the right thickness.

Types of Thicknessers

Thicknessers come in different types and sizes. There can be a difference in the wattage, the power, the accessories and the scope of delivery. The best choice is made with an exact purpose in mind. A thicknesser is typically confused with a planer, but as you have seen above, there is a clear difference between the two machines. If you want to machine wood, then you will probably need both machines. For this reason, there is also a planer thicknesser machine today. This is a combination machine that takes care of the entire finish. Do you want to buy a thicknessing machine? Then know what your goal is and know that you will probably also need a planer, but that you also have the option of choosing a combination woodworking machine.

How to choose a quality Thicknesser

As a professional, you want a machine that does its job well, so that you too can do your job to the best of your ability. A good thicknessing machine offers you extra safety during your work. For example, there are thicknessers that have protection against motor overload. Quality thicknessers are easy to use and therefore easy to set up. They also ensure as little dust as possible. This can be done by means of a dust extraction option. So pay close attention to all the features before you buy one. Not sure which one to buy? We are happy to give you tailored advice!
